Guide to Hacking Your AC:CF Game

WARNING: THIS TUTORIAL IS OUT OF DATE AND NO LONGER MAINTAINED. Please do not ask me any questions, I do not know the answer. Google is your friend.

Please note: This guide is how to hack using the Twilight Hack in installing the Homebrew Channel. There is a method involving installing Gecko, but I have yet to test that one myself.

Disclaimer: Please be aware that this hack has the potential to damage your Wii, your game save, and void your warranty, depending on how Nintendo wants to deal with it. HOWEVER, it is amongst the safest hacks so long as you read the directions thoroughly before attempting and always keep backups of your game saves.

That being said, there have been no reported incidences of Nintendo voiding the Wii's warranty (message me if this changes) and the Homebrew Channel and hacks associated can be deleted from your machine whenever you want.

1) Downloading the Homebrew Channel

Follow the link above and download the .DOL package. Once saved, find the file on your computer and unpack with your program of choice (I use WinRAR).

2) Exploiting the Twilight Hack
Please keep in mind to read the important information concerning the hack's compatibility with system updates.

Read the above website and follow the directions thoroughly. The "homebrew Wii executable" you will be using is the Homebrew Channel you just downloaded - open the folder that you unpacked (it should be named the_homebrew_channel with a version number tacked onto the end).

Copy and paste the contents of that folder into the root directory of the formatted SD card you will be using, then continue to follow the directions on the link above.

3) Installing and using the Save Game Extractor/Installer

Download: Savegame Extractor
Download: Savegame Installer

Download both files above. You should have the Homebrew Channel installed onto your Wii by this point.

On your SD card, create a folder named APPS from the root. From the APPS folder, create a folder named SavExtractor and another named SavInstaller.

Find the savegame-extractor zip file on your computer and unpack it. Find the .dol file within, rename it to boot.dol, and paste it into the SavExtractor folder on your SD card.

Do the same for the savegame-installer ... find the zip file, unpack it, and find the .dol file within. Rename it to boot.dol and paste it into the SavInstaller folder on your SD card.

Insert your SD card into your Wii and insert your Animal Crossing: City Folk game disc into your Wii.

Load the Homebrew Channel and you should see two new applications - your extractor and installer utilities. Go ahead and load up the extractor utility (select it and press Load).

You should see a black screen with some lettering. Make sure your AC:CF disc is in your Wii and press the Restart button on your Wii - this won't restart it, but it will start the process of it dumping your save onto the SD card. Don't touch anything, just let it do it's thing. When it's done, it will say OK! and then return to just a few lines of text. Press your Wii's Power button once and it will restart your machine.

Remove the SD card from your Wii and open it on your computer. You should now see a new folder on it called WIISAVES. Inside that folder, you will see another folder that says RUUE. Inside that one, you will see a few files - most importantly, you should see a file named RVFOREST.DAT. This is your save file you will be editing.

4) Modifying your extracted save
ALWAYS MAKE BACKUPS OF YOUR GAME SAVE. Copy the RUUE folder to your computer. Do this every time you modify in case you mess something up!

The following programs are available to modify your save game:

ACToolkit -- Discussion forum
Pattern View -- Discussion forum
NPC Tool -- Discussion forum
DLC Installer -- Discussion forum

The discussion forums listed above require registration, but it's free and the information there is great. Plus, you can keep track of updates - a lot of these programs are still being frequently updated, with new features being added!

ACToolkit - This is a powerful program. With it, you can modify all sorts of things - your bank account, your grass, move buildings, change your town layout (see the acre explanation before attempting).

Pattern View - With this, you can modify all of the in-game user patterns on your computer. You can also import and export patterns. Read the discussion linked above for a lot of useful information.

NPC Tool - This program allows you to change your ten existing neighbors in your town. Use a neighbor list to make sure you are modifying their personality correctly... with this, you can also export your neighbor's patterns and modify the way they look. Imagine, a bright yellow Bob! :O That feature is for advanced users.

DLC Installer - There are a few items that are user made that you can use and share with friends. Use this to implement them into your game.

5) Re-installing your extracted save

After using the above programs to modify your save file, you'll need to reinstall your save for it to take effect on your game. Insert your SD card into your Wii and load the Homebrew Channel.

Select the SavInstaller utility on the Homebrew Channel and follow the directions - press the Reset button on your console to start the process, and once it's finished, press the Power button to reboot your machine.

After that... you're done! Start up your AC:CF game and you should see the changes in your game. You will need to extract your save every time you want to modify it, or else it won't be the most current file of your game.

Neat, yeah?

I've been thinking more and more of using a hack so that I can have both the lighthouse and the windmill. Also, I would like the ability to "repair" my grass. One thing about starting over is I'm suddenly all to aware of where I'm walking in my town. It's sad to almost be like "CAN'T WALK ANYWHERE. WILL KILL GRASS. D:"

Out of curiousity...in those hacks, can you make your toon have bed head or is that just a matter of time travelling enough to get it?

I just hacked this week and would have loved this..... It will be very handy for those yet to take the plunge. The main reason I wanted to hack was to make dirt paths. I made them and they are soooo cute. The other reason I hacked was to be able to pick me neighbors. I have not change any neighbors yet because I've been spending too much time just moving stuff around and making my dirt paths. Thanks for providing the community with this great information!

The main reason I wrote this is because I needed something catch-all to link people to. Every time I mention hacking, there is always at least one person asking me how to do it. :P

Anyways, you're welcome! I haven't messed with dirt paths much because the grass editor doesn't show buildings and I don't feel like loading and reloading while I get it just right. Bah.

I know the ACToolkit doesn't work with Macs, but I'm not sure about the rest of the modification tools. Sorry.

I think the new (1.2) ACToolkit also has the DLC items. Are there other DLC items available in the DLC installer?
Feb. 28th, 2009 12:25 am (UTC)
Not yet, but I hear they are in the works.

It's good to at least familiarize yourself with the DLC Installer because the creator of the ACToolkit is usually quite busy, so updates for it can take some time. If new content is created, you can help out your impatience with the DLC Installer instead of waiting on Virus to update it. :)

First glitch I found from Hacking
I waited until I had bought my town bridge, and it had been placed before I hacked my town. I redid my acres to remind me of LaJolla Ca. Every week I get the request to go pick my bridge spot again, I pick it, and wait a week, and get the notice "bridge done, go celebrate", no bridge. I have done this 4 times now, and I believe I will need to start over to get rid of this glitch. I really want the fountain and lighthouse to be placed, and the town hall to recognize that they are there and don't have to be placed again.

Or maybe I should just put the fountain and lighthouse in by hacking and never add to the town fund again?

Re: First glitch I found from Hacking
How strange! What version of the toolkit did you use? I messed with my acres plenty when 1.0 was out and never experienced that glitch.

Did you keep backups of your previous town layouts, to see if the problem could be fixed that way?

It took me some trial and error to figure out I had to rename them, too. I finally got it after I compared the extractor/installer files to some of my other utilities I have installed and know are working.

To backup your save, all you need to do is copy the RUUE folder. I usually rename the folder to "RUUE - 2-28-09" or whatever date the save was last played. To install the backup, just paste the contents of that folder into the RUUE folder on the SD card You can play multiple towns this way as well, you just need to save the RUUE folders and keep track of which is which.

thanks for replying...lol you saw it before i deleted the post and it was only on here for a split second! Yeah it has taken me off and on about a week to deal with this. I'm happy its done now. But I do have a wuestion about AC Toolkit though. When I open it all it shows in the folder is what is on my destop...what am I doing wrong? am I to just double click on it? I D/L it from the actual site.
Feb. 28th, 2009 08:08 pm (UTC)
LOL, sorry! I didn't realize you had deleted it until after I replied... I have email notifications. XD

When you open the ACToolkit, it will want to open the RVFOREST.DAT file. The default location it points to is your desktop, so you need to locate the proper file, wherever you've saved it.
Feb. 28th, 2009 08:12 pm (UTC)
how strange....i have d/l and deleted ac toolkit maybe 3 times now and finally it shows properly.
off to get my grass back! thanks so much for being attentive to this.
i'll have to have you over soon for a visit :)

I want to go to someone's town who's changed their neighbors... I want to see some ideas

Name: JJ
Town: Rainland
Friend Code: 4854-9940-1862
Mar. 1st, 2009 03:10 pm (UTC)
I don't have any of my neighbors changed, but maybe someone here does. I haven't seen many people mess with it.
Mar. 1st, 2009 09:45 pm (UTC)
If I had an SD card I would definetly do this, but I don't know where to get one...
Mar. 1st, 2009 11:00 pm (UTC)
Online, Walmart, Best Buy... pretty much anywhere! I believe the Wii only accepts SD cards that are 2GB and under.

Question: Will The Homebrew Channel work if you use it without the Twilight Hack?
Mar. 7th, 2009 01:02 am (UTC)
You have to use the Twilight Hack to even install the Homebrew Channel, so. I think you can use Gecko to install it, but I'm not sure.

You can still get them by going to the CodeRetard site. They muet have disabled hotlinking them.

I uploaded them to Mediafire. The links have been edited. Thanks for letting me know.

Folders inside the APPS folder.

ACCF neighbors
I would really like to choose my neighbors, do you know if this is possible?
Thanks for your help!

Yep. In my post, there is a link to the NPC_Tool. The forum requires registration, but it's free and it has all the directions right there. :)

please help!
I'm stuck on the very first step! I followed the instuctions exactly but when I try to copy the twilight hack to my wii, it just says "information not copied". Have you ever come across this problem? I know I have the correct version and I've never reformatted my SD card, I don't know what to do. T-T
Thanks for you help.
Mar. 21st, 2009 05:16 am (UTC)
Re: please help!
Sounds like a problem with your SD card. Try reformatting it, since you've never done it before.

Other than that, I haven't a clue. I'm sorry. :(
Mar. 28th, 2009 04:20 pm (UTC)
i have a doubt!
"The Twilight Hack is achieved by playing a hacked game save for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess"

does this mean i have to play The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess?? why would i do that if i want to hack AC:CF?!?!
Mar. 28th, 2009 06:02 pm (UTC)
Re: i have a doubt!
lol sorry i'm such a noob forget about that!
but now here's my next question, i hope you can answer this!

so.. i have my SD CARD and it has a folder that says "private" but to install the twilight thing i need to copy another folder that says "private" too, so should i delete the one in my sd card and put the one of twilight? or rename it?? or something else?

NPC tool
I have had the npc tool program for a few days now and have changed all of my villagers and have even started to customize a few, my avatar is a koala I edited, I named her Pancakes and filled her house with the sweets furniture set. Her birthday is on Halloween ^-^

Re: NPC tool
Haha, that's a cute idea!

I unfortunately updated my Wii to 4.0 like 2 days before I found out about homebrew. I have downloaded the AC Toolkit in anticipation of a new hack being completed. Is there anyone who knows about a RVFOREST.DAT I could download, change and learn with until a new hack is finished?
Apr. 24th, 2009 12:34 am (UTC)
Just an FYI for people, if you have a pirated copy of the game you can't extract the save. I like to try games before I buy and I wanted to test this to see how it works. :P
Jun. 9th, 2009 06:49 am (UTC)
I tried following the instructions (with the exception of using Save game Extract/Install v2.0). However, when I reach the part where I have to dump my save onto my SD card it reads, "Error!... (ret = -1).
Any ideas? I'm not very good at the whole hacking thing, so please take it easy on my with any feedback :)
